We are pleased to announce that Ms. Crystal King has been selected as the fourth Director of the Carolina Union. Crystal is both the first woman and the first African-American to lead the Carolina Union.
In her new role Ms. King will be responsible for the management of the Carolina Union organization and the operation of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union Building. She will serve as the visionary of the Carolina Union as it builds and supports community through the provision of programs, activities, student organization support, services, and facilities. Her portfolio will also include the Student Activities Office, Carolina Leadership Development Office, the Student Activities Fund Office, and Student Government.
Previously, Ms. King served as the Associate Executive Director of University Unions at the University of Texas at Austin and brings a wealth of experience working with student union operations and student activities to Carolina. Crystal was directly responsible for managing the building operations of four student life facilities. Other positions held on the UT Austin campus have included serving as Director of the Student Activity Center, Associate Director of Student Programs and Assistant Director of Student Programs. Crystal is certified as a LEED Green Associate and has substantial experience with planning and executing facility renovations. While in her role as the Director of the Student Activity Center, she managed a $68 million construction project for a 149,000 square foot University Unions facility.
Ms. King was selected by a search committee after a nationwide search, and joined the Carolina family July 29, 2013. Crystal is a native of Tennessee and received her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Memphis. She received her master’s degree in College and University Student Personnel Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Crystal lives in Pittsboro with her husband and two children.
