Serving as the 2016-2017 Carolina Union Activities Board (CUAB) President and Carolina Union Board of Directors Vice-Chair is Neil Mohan Harwani, a rising junior business administration major.

Harwani programmed for students in the Manning East Community with the Residence Hall Association (RHA) last year and said that he enjoyed that experience. “At the end of my first year, I saw CUAB as an opportunity to really expand my reach, instead of programming just in my community, I wanted to support the entire campus community, programmatically.” Harwani said.

Currently serving as the CUAB Union programming chair and the RHA community governor of Ram Village, Harwani applied to be CUAB President in hopes of bringing new ideas and changes to benefit Carolina students.

“I want to keep building on this year’s successes within CUAB by trying new and innovative ideas that haven’t been done before and by modifying already existing programs” Harwani said.

Harwani’s plans for CUAB include expanding the organization’s reach beyond main campus to south campus, graduate and professional schools, and off campus students. Harwani’s goals are to connect to all fee paying students no matter their demographic or their current home on campus.

“With CUAB, we provide activities for every type of person –we program intentionally and inclusively all across campus, in order to provide a place for everybody.”

He recently attended a conference called National Association for Campus Activities with other CUAB members, chairs and advisor. He said they saw a lot of great acts and booked several, including spoken word artists and a step show.

“We wanted to find events that allow us to partner with student organizations and other campus groups that we haven’t partnered with before,” Harwani said.

Harwani is excited for his new role in the upcoming year, especially about working with the rest of the board, who are being selected now.

“It’s really going to be a strong board – and I am excited to help CUAB create a positive experience for the UNC community.”

Selected as the 2016-2017 Chair of the Carolina Union Board of Directors is Boateng Kubi, a junior from Prince George’s County, MD, majoring in biology with a double minor in chemistry and philosophy on the pre-med track.

His leadership positions on campus will translate well to his new position as Chair. He serves as vice president of public relations for the Carolina Union Activities Board, chair of recruitment and outreach of the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students, and fellow for Generation Financial Knowledge Development (GENFKD).

In this role, Kubi will serve as the representative of the Board and the student face of the Union. The Chair of the Board provides leadership and oversight in all aspects of the Board, including finance, planning, student affairs, advancement, and other key areas. He has set priorities for the Board for the upcoming year.

“The Union should position itself to educate all students on what is happening globally, expand our current programs, and respond to national issues,” Kubi said.

Kubi’s plans include encouraging student participation in programs provided by Carolina Leadership Development and programming to historically marginalized groups to recognize and celebrate these populations. As Chair, he wants to make the Union a discussion space to educate students about broader social issues.

“The Carolina Union is the beating heart of the University,” Kubi said. As the building has served as a home for him and many other students, he aims to make the Union a safe and interactive space for all students.

We want to hear from you! Complete our survey and share your feedback regarding the Union. Prizes will be given out daily and include: UNC sweatshirts, UNC t-shirts, cupcakes, phone accessories, and more. At the end of April one grand prize winner will be selected and will receive dinner for three at Top of the Hill.

Take our survey now!

Winners will be selected at random. Your name and email address will not be linked to your responses in the survey.
