We are All Spartans Today!

The Student Union holds a special place in my heart.  It was one of the first places I hung out in when I was in college.  It became my living room of the campus where I met up with friends, hung out, ate, went to activities and attended meetings.   Last night students at Michigan State University were doing the same sort of things at their Student Union when an active shooter situation occurred.  This really hit close to home for me, for many of us working in the Carolina Union and with many of my colleagues who work in Student Unions around the country.

I have been working in Student Unions for close to 30 years.  The Student Union was my place to go to when I was in college and it is because of my great experiences in the Union that I chose to work in Higher Education.  The Student Union is the living room of the campus and a central meeting place for many students at colleges and universities across our nation. The Student Union is a place where students work, learn, grow and develop.  It’s a place where students make memories to last a lifetime.

Our mission at the Carolina Union is to create safe, inclusive and educational experiences that enable students to maximize their time at Carolina.  We will continue to hold true to our mission and work to provide the best experiences for our students every day.

Please keep the Michigan State University community in your thoughts.  We are all Spartans today!

Thank you

Alexandra Marchesano, M.S.

Executive Director of the Carolina Union

The Carolina Union is conducting research on how we can make the Union feel like the living room of the campus.

We would love to hear from you about how we can make the Union a space where students feel comfortable, welcome, as well as a space that supports their success as members of the Carolina Community.

The survey will only take about 5 minutes to complete and your responses are completely anonymous. You can only take the survey once, and the survey will close on November 14th. If you have any questions about the survey, please email us at [email protected]

We really appreciate your input!

The survey can be found at the following link https://go.unc.edu/cusvylvrm or scan the QR code below with mobile device.

The staff in the Carolina Union have been participating in a program called JEDI which stands for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

This program was created by Dr. Bobby Kunstman, Director of Student Life and Leadership.  It was created in response to the racial unrest during the summer of 2020.  This past year, the Carolina Union staff participated in committees around JEDI.  One of the committees focused on community service.  The goal of this committee was to incorporate community service as part of the All-Staff Retreat.  This year, the All-Staff Retreat was with Habitat for Humanity.  On August 4th, we went to Hillsborough to help build a house for a family in need.  On August 5th, we met and reflected on our experience working on a Habitat for Humanity house.  The staff had a great day knowing they were helping a family in need.  We will be doing more community service over the next year.  Please take a look at the pictures form our day with Habitat for Humanity.
