Rejection therapy. There are a plethora of reasons why students apply to the NC Fellows program, but Sevilay Coskun, wanted to challenge herself with the written applications and in-person interviews.

“I thought the program was incredibly unique and intriguing,” said Coskun. “I wanted to see how far I would get in the selection process, and it has been one of the most meaningful things I have been involved in at Carolina.”

Coskun is a member of the Class of 2027 Cohort. She is a double major in Political Science and History with a concentration in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. As a strong leader, she plans to enter a career in security policy or international affairs after graduation.

“Fellows has pushed me outside my social comfort zone, encouraged me to listen to people’s stories, and ask more questions,” said Coskun.” “These experiences have equipped me with interpersonal skills that have deepened my understanding of global communities and policymakers’ decision-making process.”

As an international student from Ankara, Türkiye Coskun came to Carolina looking for deep connections and friendships.

“Chautauquas, by far, have been the most impactful program component,” said Coskun. “Having the opportunity to share with each other what shaped the person we are today is extremely valuable.”

Chautauquas are meant to give each student the opportunity to reflect on what values are important to them and how they have grown as a leader. NC Fellows transforms the traditional classroom setting by allowing students to share personal experiences to connect with their peers and teaching staff.

While Fellows are busy inside and outside the classroom, the program ensures each student walks away with fond memories.

“Making marshmallows, stargazing, playing capture the flag, doing a ropes course, and staying in a cabin together helped me get to know my cohort well,” said Coskun. “It was a bonding experience, and I have met some incredible people through NC Fellows.”

NC Fellows walk away from the program with transferable leadership skills and lifelong friendships. Coskun is joining the NC Fellows Leadership team in the fall as the EDUC 309 Teaching Assistant.
