The Lab hosted its first workshop of the year, DIY Electronic Accessories, with Be a Maker Space on Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Kenan Sciences Library Makerspace. The workshop allowed students to get hands-on in creating bracelets from conductive tools.

After an informative presentation showing how new technologies have influenced design, students learned first-hand why hands-on making remains a vital tool in creativity and the design process. Throughout the process, they learned about basic circuit systems, LED lights, and even a little sewing. What were individual materials at the beginning of the night, became felt bracelets that lit up when the snaps were closed together.

"It was a really neat experience to think about design from a new, more mechanical perspective rather than just the visual. Having someone present a new outlet of creativity to me was so fun," said Allison Lyles, a senior graphic design major at UNC and design assistant at the Carolina Union.

The Lab, led by the Carolina Union Communications & Creative Services department, is a workshop series that focuses on design and creativity. It provides students of all majors and artistic ability with the opportunity to exercise their creativity and understand design as it relates to their own lives. The Lab partnered with BeAM for this workshop.

BeAM, or Be A Maker, is a network of makerspaces across UNC’s campus equipped with 3D printing technologies, wood and metalworking shops, and other tools to turn various materials into art and solutions for scientific and technical challenges. Like The Lab, BeAM opens its door to all Tar Heels.

This collaboration manifested into a fun, interactive learning environment. By the end of the night, students went home with not only an expanded knowledge of circuits, but a memorable creative experience and LED light-up bracelets.

The Lab workshops are categorized into three classifications: hands-on creativity, thought provocation, and basic skills/career building. Sessions have limited spots, but they are free and open to all UNC students who register to attend. Sign up if you are interested in experiencing design first-hand!

The Carolina Union and Blank Canvas Dance Company invites the Carolina community to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for our newly-renovated Carolina Union Rehearsal Space on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 5pm. The ceremony will take place in the Underground, located on the first floor of the FPG Student Union. Join us to celebrate the success of this project, which will benefit all dance students and organizations on campus.

When the old rehearsal space needed remodeling, Blank Canvas stepped forward and funded the project with the desire to make a contribution to the dance community at Carolina. Blank Canvas is the largest student-run dance organization at Carolina, and the only dance company on campus that welcomes all dancers, regardless of style or experience. As an inclusive organization, they strive to provide an outlet for anyone at UNC to dance.

Following the ribbon cutting, there will be performances by Blank Canvas Dance Company, Kamikazi Hip-Hop Dance Team, and Moonlight Hip-Hop Dance Crew. We encourage all to attend and support the dance community in celebration of this wonderful gift.

Assessing Student Needs

On Wednesday, August 31, the student-comprised Carolina Union Board of Directors and Raleigh-based VINES Architecture reconvened after the summer for their first meeting of the school year. Lead by Board Chair, Boateng Kubi, the meeting focused on this semester’s upcoming #UNCUnionIdeas Study; an initiative approved by last year’s Board.

The study is designed to assess the needs of the UNC student body along with the ability of the Carolina Union’s current facilities to meet those needs. With this information, it will identify potential areas of improvement for the future.

The study has multiple phases, and is currently in the process of information gathering with the student body and Carolina Union staff. The Board is spearheading the effort, along with the help of VINES Architecture to capture the needs of the UNC student population first-hand.

Learning from Our Peers

This summer, Boateng, along with fellow students, visited several top flight student unions at universities across the country, including Texas A&M; the University of Houston; and the University of California, Berkeley. These trips helped to draw inspiration from peer institutions and envision our Union’s potential.

Heels Have a Voice

Now that the fall semester has arrived, the Board needs the help of students to shape the Union’s future - there will be ample opportunities to voice suggestions through surveys, focus groups, interviews, and social media. The #UNCUnionIdeas Survey running from September 6-16 has been delivered to student email accounts. This is a quick and easy outlet for students to express their needs and opinions. Plus, prizes will be given away every day for taking the survey!

Student responses are invaluable to ensuring the study captures the real needs of the Carolina community. They will also help the Carolina Union continue to uphold its mission. The Union and the Board will be in regular communication with students throughout the semester with regards to engagement opportunities and findings from the study.

What's Next?

Following the completion of the study at the end of the fall semester, VINES will provide a report comprised of detailed findings from the study. This report will contain a program of potential spaces to include in a future Union, and a building concept based on those spaces; both based on student feedback. Upon its completion, the results of the study will be made available to the student body by the Carolina Union Board of Directors.

Because the future of the Union will be shaped directly by the vision and ideas of students, students are encouraged to continuously provide their input to the study through the survey, and participate in the many other engagement opportunities this fall. You can also use the hashtag #UNCUnionIdeas on Twitter to share your thoughts with @CarolinaUnion at any time.

Think big, and boldly share all of your exciting ideas with us. This is your opportunity to leave a lasting legacy at the University of North Carolina, and tremendously elevate the student life of Tar Heels for many years to come.
