Carolina Union Celebrates Dr. King's Legacy

The Carolina Union is proud to be a part of this year’s campus-wide celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Events begin on Sunday, January 18, with the MLK Memorial Banquet at the William and Ida Friday Center. Monday is chock full of festivities, with the 35th annual Keynote Lecture and Awards Ceremony capping off the day at 7:30pm in Memorial Hall. Hosted by the Carolina Union Activities Board and the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, this keynote will feature civil rights activist Angela Davis (pictured above). Complimentary tickets sold out within the first day of availability, but overflow tickets are still available by making reservations.
Other Union activities include hosting the “I Have A Dream” campaign in the Art Gallery all month and a screening of the film The Fight In the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farm Workers’ Struggle on Tuesday, January 20, at 5:00pm in Room 3209.
Festivities continue throughout the week thanks to the hard work of the MLK Celebration Committee, a body of 22 student representatives from campus organizations. Jesus Barreto represents the Carolina Union Activities Board on the committee, and he’s enjoyed the opportunity to work with other campus leaders: “I feel inspired to be able to represent my organization in such an important university initiative.”
To echo Jesus’s sentiment, the Union is so pleased to join our campus partners in celebration of Dr. King’s legacy.
