A passion for civic engagement can bring meaningful change and empower communities. For one Union employee, this passion began early, inspired by voting trips with her father. “He would talk about the importance of local elections and how to research referendums. Those experiences shaped my understanding of the voting process,” said Natasha Young of Student Life & Leadership. This inspiration was reignited during a voter registration event when a student asked, “How do I actually go vote?” For Natasha, this question emphasized the need first-time voters have for clear, nonpartisan voter education.
Natasha’s commitment to civic engagement led to an unexpected invitation to the White House. “To this day, I’m not sure how they found me,” Natasha shared. However, this invitation didn’t surprise her colleagues at the Carolina Union. Natasha plays a pivotal role in Tar Heels Vote!, a nonpartisan initiative aimed at increasing student voter participation and fostering civic awareness. Through this program, Natasha organizes voter registration drives, educational events, and collaborations with local and national organizations, ensuring students have the resources and knowledge to actively engage in the democratic process.
At the event, which took place on November, 26th, 2024, representatives from universities, nonprofits, and the White House discussed voter trends, engagement strategies, and civic initiatives. A key takeaway for Natasha was the importance of focusing on “off” years to build networks and strengthen efforts. “That advice has stuck with me and is shaping how I approach civic engagement initiatives on campus.”
The visit also highlighted shared challenges, including keeping initiatives nonpartisan in a polarized climate. “Hearing others face the same struggles validated the importance of promoting Tar Heels Vote! as a fully nonpartisan initiative. It also reinforced the need to create resources that empower first-time voters.”
“The [Carolina] Union plays a central role in these efforts as it’s a place where students can ask questions, register to vote, and engage in meaningful civic dialogue,” Natasha explained. Similarly, events and initiatives like Tar Heels Vote! and the Promote Democracy coalition create opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to collaborate in strengthening civic engagement.
By empowering Tar Heels to make their voices heard in elections, Natasha exemplifies the Carolina Union’s mission to support student leadership, community engagement, and lifelong civic responsibility.
