The Carolina Union Board of Directors conducted interviews on Saturday, February 1, 2014, for the position of 2014-2015 Carolina Union President. Following an afternoon of interviews and deliberation, Gabe Chess was selected to serve as the Carolina Union President with responsibilities including Chair of the Carolina Union Board of Directors and President of the Carolina Union Activities Board.
No stranger to the Carolina Union over the last year, Chess has served as the Carolina Union Activities Board Music Committee Chair and as an appointed member of the Carolina Union Board of Directors.
Chess, a junior from Asheville, NC, has been instrumental in the planning, promotion, fundraising, and success of the ConvergeNC Music Festival. He has also produced numerous programs for the campus community, collaborating with individuals and organizations from a wide range of backgrounds and interests.
Chess stated that he believes that the Union serves as a “central hub and a platform for students to achieve whatever they want to do.” Additionally, he stated that the Union has offered him “the best career insight and guidance out of any place on campus.”
As Carolina Union President, Chess is committed to working with CUAB to produce successful events that will enrich the University experience for a greater number of students and to building upon former Carolina Union President Carly Mathews’s charge of recognizing and improving internal deficiencies. He plans to strengthen subcommittee communication to the larger Carolina Union Board and to work with the Director of the Carolina Union to establish the 5-10 year goals of the Union.
When asked what role the Carolina Union should play in a student’s experience at Carolina, Chess commented, “A student doesn’t need to know the Union is helping them all of the time; but, a student should never feel that the Union is inhibiting his or her experience.”

Please join us for the annual Chancellor's Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 22 at 3pm in the Great Hall of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union.

Ty Fenton, a senior environmental studies major, has worked as a student Operations Assistant and then Supervisor for the Carolina Union since his freshman year. During the past semester, he has demonstrated an excellent level of community engagement, and has frequently displayed his interest in community involvement to his peers and supervisors.

Ty is a student who has shown incredible dedication to the environmental impact of nonrenewable resources in not only in the Carolina community, but in the local and global community as well. Ty is part of the Epsilon Eta environmental honors fraternity, the first of its kind in the nation, and through his membership in this fraternity has actively pursued the introduction of measures to reduce disposable bag use in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities. He has been in contact with both local governments to actively discuss his proposals (see attached article) which include bag taxes to incentivize the use of reusable shopping bags. The more global aspect of Ty’s engagement in the community is reflected in his work with Strata Solar (a Chapel Hill-based solar company with global efforts) in efforts to provide data on and bring attention to the benefits of adopting renewable energy to the public both locally and abroad.

Through Ty’s involvement with his fraternity, he has also engaged directly with the community in efforts to promote sustainability education, highlighting the issue of environmental conservatism as a local and global issue that cuts across cultural boundaries. He has also performed more than a dozen hours of community service this academic semester, from volunteering in trash pick up to volunteering in community events.

His involvement and engagement in the community is something that Ty considers a core part of his personal and academic career mission, and his drive to work with and bring sustainable change to these communities is derived from his incredible sense of personal and ethical responsibility to maintaining a sustainable local and global environment.

Betsy Pierce, House Staff Coordinator from the House of Gryffindor, was recently honored as the Union’s fall Employee of the Semester. During Betsy’s five semesters with the Union, she has illustrated a great amount of growth and this semester her Union House Cup pride really made her shine. Betsy has been an irreplaceable staff member through the busy fall semester. She has stepped into multiple roles at once and has handled the responsibility with grace and poise. Betsy has consistently engaged with her staff members and has encouraged others to participate both in and outside of the Union. Her ability to multi-task has been valuable to the fast-paced office environment and her contributions are evident through the day-to-day tasks that full time staff have confidently delegated to her. Congratulations to Betsy!

Charles Realubit of EPIC staff was nominated and won Tar Heel of the Month in November. Charles was nominated for his Personal Responsibility. He has been an exemplary employee within the Union and has recently become a supervisor within the Events Planning student staff. One of the skills Charles demonstrates is a great amount of self-awareness. Charles is an active participant in events the Union hosts, and has played a large role in creating excitement at the monthly meets we have hosted this semester. He was one of the first people to arrive at both the Volleyball tournament and Halloween event, and is consistently encouraging others to get involved. Charles is also on the board for the dance team, Kamakazi. He does a fantastic job balancing his academic, work, and extra-curricular commitments, and always puts the organizations' needs prior to his. In the month of October Charles was nominated for Employee of the Month for his Initiative. As a contributor to the Union community and student staff we are very lucky to have such a passionate and curious leader with us, and it has been a joy to watch Charles develop professionally and personally within the many roles he has accepted. His sense of purpose here at Carolina is rooted in assisting and guiding others, and we consider ourselves lucky to have the opportunity to engage with Charles on a daily basis.
