About CUAB

Mission

The Activities Board will coordinate the work of the committees, discuss common problems, study the techniques of effective group work and service, and formulate social, cultural, entertaining, and educational programs. The respective committees and their members will plan, sponsor, and execute these programs with the approval of the Activities Board. (From the Carolina Union By Laws)

History

As an organization, the Carolina Union Activities Board has existed since the opening of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union in 1969. However, the tradition of student planned events and activities goes as far back as the 1930s when Graham Memorial served as, among other things, a student union.

The great lounge of Graham Memorial, which now boasts some of the most welcoming couches and fireplaces on campus, throughout the years has hosted speeches, bands, and sock hops. As the years went on and buildings changed, the tradition of student service did not: the Union and CUAB still serve as a home for students seeking to plan exciting events, enrich Carolina traditions, and serve their fellow Tar Heels.
