The Student Activities Fund Office was created in 1932 to account for and provide fund control over student fees collected by the university and returned to student government for allocation and administration. SAFO’s services were later expanded to include any officially recognized UNC student organization that wished to utilize SAFO services. In addition to Student Government and the approximately 100 organizations it funds, SAFO also provides accounting services for approximately 500 other student-related organizations.
SAFO has three employees and a director. In an average fiscal year the office deposits approximately $11 million dollars in organizations’ funds and disburses $10 million on behalf of the organizations served. In addition SAFO provides payroll services including all related taxes for 15 organizations and maintains receivables for 8 fraternities, sororities, and related Greek house corporations. SAFO receives no university or state funding. The office is funded from income derived from the investment of organizations’ deposited funds at a local bank, the university investment pool, and charges to member organizations serviced by SAFO.
